So one USB port on my iMac goes to my backup drive, and everything else can plug into this hub, including my printer. This works. I needed reliable accessible inputs for USB & Firewire. The rubber stand is not the best, but it works and does not move around after it is all hooked up. I use it primarily to sync and charge my iPod and iPhone, and it works without a hitch on my iMac. It will not work with my back up hard drive, but I am not surprised and didn't really expect it to. So Five Stars from me in that it meets my expectations.
After reading all the reviews with mixed ratings here I decided to give this hub a try. It has great reviews. False advertising claims are true.In my opinion, even if you don't need the Firewire ports the price of this hub makes it a good deal for people who are looking for a USB hub.
I have attached 2 external hard drives (SimpleTech Mini and Iomega) and a Logitech webcam that don't have their own power sources and so far they're all working just fine.I don't have any Firewire devices around to test whether the issue of firewire ports not being powered that was reported by some reviewers here is valid or not. White case and the little piece of soft plastic that let's you keep the hub in a vertical position are nice. The installation is pretty easy; after all it's just a USB hub; one USB cable to the computer/laptop and one power cable and I was done under 30 secs.
It also looks a bit better than competition. As a USB hub it's working like it's supposed to.I dropped 1 star as everybody else pointed out you don't get 3 Firewire ports. One port is used to connect this hub to the Firewire port on your desktop/laptop so that leaves you with 2 available ports for use.
If you don't want to risk purchasing this hub after reading the mixed reviews here, go buy the CyberPower 7 port USB hub. I ordered one for my home office so I will be testing that one soon as well.
My daughter like it because it gave her more usb options to her pc but I miss understood when I purchase it. I was looking for what I thought was a adapter to be able to use both usb and firewire since my daughter's pc does not have firewire she had the option to use both. So I am right back to square one.
I really liked the design of this unit but it failed completely after about 90 days.just stopped working. Other types and brands of hubs connected to my iMac work just fine so I've no idea what happened to this one. Wish I could recommend it as I had high hopes, but I'd go with something else.
The power source is worthless, as is IOGear's customer service department. It will be an utter waste of your time and money to buy this item or anything else from this company. --Lisa H.
